Stormwater Management Program

The City of Bowling Green's Stormwater Management Program's goal is to reduce or eliminate pollutant loadings from our Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4). This work is important because water that enters our MS4 does not receive treatment prior to being discharged into local waterways. Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System in plain language is the storm sewer system that the City of Bowling Green owns that does not drain to the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Stormwater Overview

Stormwater is precipitation from rain events and snow melt that can infiltrate into the ground, evaporate into the atmosphere, collect on trees and plants, or runoff into a storm sewer system, which eventually will be discharged to local streams. As water travels over land, it collects debris, litter and contaminates that will be delivered directly into our environment. The purpose of the City of Bowling Green's Stormwater Management Program (SWMP) is to reduce or eliminate these pollutants to the maximum extent practicable.

Get Involved

The City offers ongoing opportunities for individuals or groups to participate in activities that help improve water quality including the following:

  • Volunteer to do a litter/stream cleanup in your neighborhood or in areas that have identified for cleanup by city staff
